The
Queensland Manx Society was founded in August 1914 and has functioned
continuously for the benefit of its members from that day. We have over
120 members, mostly from south east Queensland, but some of our members
come from as far away as Northern New South Wales, far western
Queensland as well as North Queensland and Islands on the Great Barrier
reef.
The black and
white photograph featured, is of the original Manx Society on a picnic
after travelling up river by steamer to Seventeen Mile Rocks, in the
western area of Brisbane, 90 years ago. The flag that is being held in
the background was presented by Mr. G.W. Cowin, a Vice President of this
new society.

That same flag was again
flying high on Saturday November 6th 2004 when the Queensland Manx
Society celebrated its 90th anniversary with a boat trip up the Brisbane
River to Seventeen Mile Rocks.

During the trip, a book
entitled Gems of God's Earth was launched. It was written by
members about their memories of the Society or the Isle of Man or
anything to do with their Manxness. Over a hundred people joined
together on this day to make this anniversary a most memorable milestone
in this Society's long history. |
